I am receiving an error from the app, what should I do?

Please take a screenshot of the error message you are receiving (see below for instructions), and contact us to tell us what happens before, during and after the error message has appeared.

Taking a screenshot on a Windows computer…

  1. Click on the window you would like to capture.
  2. Press Ctrl + Print Screen(PrtScn) by holding down the Ctrl key and then pressing the Print Screen key. The Print Screen key is near the upper-right corner of your keyboard. (Depending on the type of keyboard you have, the exact key names on your keyboard may vary slightly.)
  3. Open the Paint application
  4. In the Paint window, press the Ctrlkey, then press and release the Vkey. Your captured screenshot should then appear within the paint window.
  5. To save the image, click on the Filedrop-down menu located in the upper left-hand side of the toolbar and click on Save As.. and choose where you want to save the file.

Taking a screenshot on a Mac computer…

  1. Press Command + Shift + 3 by holding down the Command (CMD) key, then holding down the Shift key, then pressing the 3 key.

I’m using a Windows or Mac computer, why am I being asked to enable a browser extension?

For us to collect your browsing activity, we need you to enable our browser extensions on the browsers you use. We currently support Safari, Chrome, and Firefox. Internet Explorer and Edge are not currently supported, so please try to use the supported browsers as much as possible during the study.

Do I need to leave my computer on?

You should leave the app running in the background on your devices when they are switched on. Please do not stop the app when viewing your running applications list. Please use the device as you normally would, ensuring the app is still running when you switch on your device.

Do you support Linux computers?

We do not currently support Linux. Mac and Windows computers are supported.

How will I know if the app on my computer is working?

On Windows computers, you will see a round green icon in the system tray.

For Apple/Mac computers, if you leave the App running after install, it will run in the background.

If you do not see the App running by either of these methods, re-open the App and keep it running in the background.

My antivirus software says this application may be harmful. Is it?

The SavvyConnect application is not harmful to your computer. We work with a number of anti-virus software companies to ensure that the application is not flagged as a threat. Sometimes there may be instances when warning messages appear. If you have any concerns please contact the panel management team.

It looks like the app is using lots of data!

The application will send a tiny amount of data each day over the internet so you won’t notice an impact on your data allowance. Although this is only a small amount, we recommend you have a data plan on your phone, or connect to WiFi whenever possible, or your network provider may charge you.

If you check your data allowance on your phone, you may see data being used by the VPN. The app utilizes a VPN (Virtual Private Network) for us to be able to see which Apps are being used during the study. When apps are used and the VPN is enabled, the data usage is attributed to the SavvyConnect App / VPN instead of the App actually in use. The VPN is not actually using any data, it is the app in use that is generating this data.

Take the following example:

  • You install the SavvyConnect app and VPN.
  • You then use your device to watch 2GB of videos on YouTube.
  • If you then look at the data usage stats, the 2GB data will show as being generated by the VPN and not the app that originally generated the request (in this case, YouTube).

How do I remove SavvyConnect?

If you are using an Android phone, simply open ‘Settings’, scroll down to Apps, find SavvyConnect, and then click ‘Uninstall’.

If you are using an iPhone, simply hold down on the app icon. When an ‘X’ appears above SavvyConnect, tap the ‘X’ to remove the app.

You should also contact your panel provider so that they can close your account for you.

My phone does not have a data plan; can I still participate?

As long as your phone is connected to Wi-Fi every day, then you can still participate.

How do I install the VPN on Android?

The VPN will install automatically when you download the app.

How do I install the VPN on iOS?

Once you have completed the app setup, you will be prompted to install the VPN. You will be guided through the simple steps to set up the VPN.

What is the VPN?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. It is a research tool that allows us to understand how you use the internet.

How do I install on Android?

To install on an Android device, simply tap the link that we send to you. The link will take you to the Google Play store. You should then just tap “Install” and allow the app to download. Simple as that! Please note that if you download directly from the Google Play Store rather than using the link we send you, you will be unable to register your app.

How do I install on iOS?

When downloading the app on an Apple phone, the link will take you to a screen containing app download instructions, however, the app will be downloaded automatically in the background. If you go to where your other apps are, you will see the SavvyConnect app downloading. If you are using iOS 10 or higher, please follow the steps below

In order to allow the SavvyConnect app to be used, you need to make sure that our software development partner, RealityMine Ltd, is selected as a trusted publisher of applications.
Don’t worry, this won’t allow unauthorized software to be used on your device, it will only give permission to the SavvyConnect app.

  1. First Run
  2. If the SavvyConnect app isn’t yet trusted, when you run it for the first time, your iPhone or iPad will display the message indicated below:

To allow the SavvyConnect app to be used, follow the steps outlined below:
Open Settings and navigate to General and then Profiles/Device Management

Tap ‘RealityMine Limited’

3. On the screen which appears tap the button labeled ‘Trust RealityMine Limited’

4. When prompted, confirm you trust SavvyConnect and our software development partner, RealityMine Limited, by pressing the button labeled ‘Trust’

After confirming you trust the application, the RealityMine Limited profile will now show as being verified

Now that the SavvyConnect app is trusted you can press the ‘Home’ button and launch the SavvyConnect app and continue registration.

How do I remove the lock screen?

The lock screen is required while you have the App and VPN running. At the end of the study, you may wish to remove it. If the certificate has not already been removed after you uninstalled the App, follow these steps to delete the certificate from your phone:

  1. Go to the Settings menu
  2. Tap ‘Security’ and scroll to the bottom of the page
  3. Select ‘Clear Credentials’ and press ‘OK’ when prompted. Don’t worry, this won’t remove any of your saved passwords, email settings or pictures and documents!

Now the certificate is gone, you can remove the lock screen:

  1. Go to the Settings menu
  2. Tap ‘Security’ and then tap ‘Screen lock’
  3. When prompted, enter your pattern or PIN
  4. Select ‘None’ from the type of lock screen required

I’m being asked to install a certificate. What should I do?

You may be asked to install an additional certificate on your phone, and you will know if you need to do so because you will see a symbol in the notification area with ‘install certificate’ next to it.

Installing the certificate is easy. Just follow the on-screen prompts. Please note that you will need to set a lock screen on your phone if you continue.

To install the certificate:

  1. Give the certificate a name and press OK. The default certificate name is fine.
  2. Follow the prompts to set either a PIN or a pattern for your lock screen. Remember what this is, since you will need it to unlock your phone!
  3. You will then see a small pop-up message on the screen letting you know the certificate has been installed.

I have changed phones. What should I do?

If you get a new phone and want to continue participating, please contact your panel provider who will send you a new download link on your new handset.

How will I know if the VPN is running?

On Android, there will be a small key symbol in the notifications bar. On iOS, there will be a rectangle with VPN written inside at the top of your screen

Will the app use up my battery?

The application will have some impact on the battery in your phone and, in some cases, especially if you are a heavy phone user, you may need to charge your phone during the day to take part in the program.

What will SavvyConnect do?

The app will sit in the background of your device and allow us to understand how you use your phone. It will be on all the time until removed.

How will I know if my phone supports the app?

Our app works on iOS 10 and above. For Android devices, the app will work on Android 5.0 and above.

How will I know if the app is working?

On Android you will see a small application icon in the notification area of the screen which indicates the application is running.

On iPhone you will see the application listed if you double-tap the home key. Do not swipe the app away from this list as it will stop the app running.

How do I check which version of iOS I have?

To check your version of iOS:

1) Open the Settings app
2) Tap ‘General’
3) Tap ‘About’
4) Scroll down and look for ‘Version’

How do I check the version of Android on my phone?

From your home screen, press Menu > Settings (or find settings in your app drawer/dock) > About Phone. Scroll all the way down and find the version.

Do I need to leave my phone on?

You should leave the app running in the background on your phone when on, but you should do whatever you normally do with your phone. Please don’t change anything.

How do I install the SimmonsConnect app on my Smartphone and Tablet?

ANDROID

If you are qualified to join the panel as a Smartphone and/or Tablet Panelist, you should have received an email and/or text message containing a link to download the SimmonsConnect app on your device. If you did not receive this link, please contact us to confirm your email address. Please follow the instructions below to install and set up the app on your Android device(s).

  1. Tapping on the link we sent will direct you to the Google Play Store. Select INSTALL and then accept the access request. Once installed, open the app from the home screen.
  2. Enter your email address. Tap SIGN IN. Follow the prompts to accept the Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy.
  3. Tap CONNECT to allow the VPN Certificate, then select CONNECT to install. Tap OK, then enter your PIN. If you have not set up a password/PIN for your device, you will be asked to do so now.
  4. Tap ENABLE ACCESSIBILITY. Scroll down to Services and select Turn on accessibility and select OK. The app should now be connected and running.

 

The app should now be connected and running. Simply leave it running in the background to earn rewards.

IOS

How do I uninstall the SimmonsConnect app from my Smartphone or Tablet?

ANDROID

  1. Tap and hold the app icon, then drag it to uninstall.
  2. Open Settings > Other Security Settings (may be called “Privacy” or “Security” depending on your device).
  3. Tap View security certificates
  4. Select User and tap the SimmonsConnect certificate to remove.
  5. Restart your device.

IOS

  1. Tap and hold the app icon until it shakes, then tap the X to delete it.
  2. Open Settings Tap General.
  3. Tap Profiles
  4. Tap the SimmonsConnect profile.
  5. Select Delete Profile.
  6. Restart your device.

How do I know the app is working and is active in the panel?

Once successfully installed, please leave the app open while you use your device so research data may be transferred; it should have zero impact on how you use your device. You can open the app and find the status as “Enabled”. If the app does not appear to work properly, please contact our panel support team.

What should I do if the app doesn’t work on my device?

Please feel free to contact our panel support team and we’ll be happy to assist you. Please have these details available:

  • Email address
  • Panel ID (if known)

The app is no longer on my device. How can I reinstall the app?

If you still have access to the original email we sent with your download link, please use that and then follow our instructions in the FAQs. If you don’t, please contact our  panel support team who will gladly provide you with a new link. Please download the app on the devices you use the most.

What happens if I close the SimmonsConnect app by swiping it closed in the recent app view on my device?

By closing the Research app, your panel status will be automatically switched to inactive and you will not earn rewards. To reactivate your status, simply re-open the app by tapping on the Simmons Connect icon from the home screen. As long as the app is open, you will be sending research data and we will send you CashPoints rewards.

Can I close the app? (only relevant if using your own smartphone)

On iPhones, please don’t close the app if you have agreed for us to measure your phone usage in the background. The app must be running all the time during the diary week as we will not receive the background data otherwise.  Your phone will send you notifications if the app is not running.  If you have not agreed to have your phone usage measured in the background, it’s fine to close the app when you are not filling in the diary.
